Deer hunters air concerns to DNR about population, wolf predation

First, following recommendations from the public at deer population goal-setting meetings in 2005 and 2006, the DNR began bringing deer populations down by issuing more antlerless deer permits. Officials discussed deer population modeling, the Winter Severity Index and deer research, using examples from specific deer permit areas.

Wolf population dips, but remains healthy

The population includes 107 packs and 20 breeding pairs. At the end of 2012, Idaho had an estimated 683 wolves, 117 packs and 34 breeding pairs. In 2013, hunters and trappers killed 356 wolves and another 94 were killed in population control actions authorized by the Idaho Department of Fish and Game.

Attempt to Override Governor’s Veto Fails in Nebraska

On Wednesday, April 2, the Nebraska Senate failed to override the Governor's veto of LB 671-the mountain lion hunting ban. Pushed by Senator Ernie Chambers, the motion which needed 30 votes to pass only garnered 24 yes votes. "This is a huge win for sportsmen and scientific wildlife management," said Nick Pinizzotto, USSA's president and CEO. "Nebraska sportsmen should thank Governor Heineman for vetoing this bill-and the sportsmen-friendly legislators that sustained the veto."
