Texas was hit with plummeting temperatures last weekend and an ice storm blanketed most of the northern portion of the state, halting deer movement for several days. But when the brutal cold subsided, bucks were on the move again looking for any remaining does that hadn’t been bred. Hunters reported lots of young bucks chasing does, but mature deer remained elusive for several days after the front.

But down in South Texas, things are heating up in a hurry with mature bucks beginning to hit the ground as the rut begins. Read about all of the white-tailed deer action in this issue of Lone Star Outdoor News, available online and on newsstands today.

Also in this issue, guides and anglers on Amistad International Reservoir say the lake is fishing unusually tough, with lake conditions worsening each year. Find out some of the possible reasons for this downturn on one of the best largemouth bass lakes in Texas.

Also in fishing, tides along the Texas coast have been unusually high this season. See what anglers are saying about all of the new water. And check out the article on venting deep-sea fish, along with cold-water crappie and other up-to-date fishing reports.

In hunting, read about a Texas bowhunter having the unbelievably rare luck of arrowing a big mountain lion from a tree stand while deer hunting in Sutton County, along with a sandhill crane hunting update and a positive hunting report on early season quail.

As always, we have the most accurate fishing reports and our popular Game Warden Blotter recounting tales of some of the most intellectually challenged lawbreakers in the state.
